Even More Down Time

December 29, 2007

Yeah – sorry for the down time again. I’m honestly surprised that I can even log in today. I haven’t written for days not because I haven’t had time to write, but because my host or its MySQL server or whatever was down. It may be the same issue that I mentioned earlier, but I honestly don’t know. I’ve had a hard time reaching their (the web host) forums as well, so who knows.

I’m now beginning to understand what this author meant when he said that not getting a domain name was one of his biggest regrets. I’ve been contemplating whether to move to another web host, but I’m sort of tied in here because I’ll have to change my site address if I do. Maybe I should bite the bullet and do it anyway. Besides, my current subdomain sucks.

Online Word Processing

December 22, 2007

I recently learned that there are many free online office suites around. These office programs work right in the browser itself. I’m currently playing with Google Docs, and will probably try a few of the others as well. They don’t have the power of the real Microsoft Office, or even the free versions of Office that are around, but I think they have some uses. For example, I like it that I don’t need to install an entire office suite on my computer just to type the occasional document. I don’t use Office much at home.

MySQL Changes

December 22, 2007

Sorry for the downtime. My web host had a MySQL upgrade that changed the host name for the server. I didn’t realize that there were changes until today. Anyway, everything is up and dandy.

Windows Vista at a 50% Discount

December 13, 2007

Microsoft will apparently modify their despicable WGA for Vista so that it no longer kills Vista if it thinks it’s fake. It’s about time. Judging by the number of false alarms that stupid software gave, accusing legitimate buyers of piracy, it’s really not much good. After SP 1 for Vista, WGA will change into nagware. If it thinks the copy of Vista is pirated, it will do irritating things like change the wallpaper, nag and so on.

The Ignorance of Our Leaders about Technology

December 13, 2007

I read in the Washington Post about how ‘he wouldn’t need to lean on his vice president, George W. Bush-style, for national security expertise, but might “rely on a vice president” for help on less important issues such as “information technology, which is the future of this nation’s economy.”‘ (quoted from the article)

Tag Clouds in WordPress

December 10, 2007

I recently added tag clouds to my pages. It’s part of the built-in facilities given by WordPress. I like the fact that I can access my previous articles by tag names, and not just by dates or by searching for it. At this point, it looks like one of the most talked about topics on my blog is WordPress, but I guess that’s because I spend quite a lot of time trying to get it to do what I want.

Are Women Really More Talkative?

December 7, 2007

The general feeling is that women are more talkative.

Not according to this study of talkativeness, affiliative speech and assertive speech though. “Contrary to prediction, men were more talkative… than were women.”

Of Performance and Down Times in Free Web Hosts

December 5, 2007

After writing about the fine print in web hosting in my earlier blog post, I find myself facing some of the things mentioned in the article I talked about. Or maybe I have faced it before, but did not realize why until now.

MPAA violates copyright law

December 4, 2007

MPAA, which goes after people who violate their copyrights, appears not to bother about infringing others’ copyrights themselves. The copyright owner of the MPA University Toolkit had his GPL license infringed, and tried contacting MPAA. The latter ignored him. (Hey, we’re the big guns. Only our copyrights matter. Who cares about you?)
